Training, workshops, and speaking · The Forward Method

Turning insight into forward motion.

Forward Road Institute helps leaders, teams, educators, and communities recognize the patterns they keep repeating, understand why, and slow them down before they take over.

Our programs are education and training, not therapy. When therapy is needed, we provide a referral.

Why Forward Road

“As someone who has worked with successful people, I’ve noticed something: sometimes the very patterns that helped us succeed become the patterns that keep us stuck.”

The same way of communicating, leading, reacting, or handling pressure keeps showing up, even when we know it’s not working anymore. Most people don’t need another lecture. They need someone who can help them see what’s really happening.

That’s why I created Forward Road Institute. Through seminars, workshops, speaking engagements, and intensives, I bring mental health expertise together with honesty, humor, and practical tools people can use right away.

Because sometimes the problem isn’t that you need to work harder. It’s that you need to stop repeating what’s no longer working. That’s where the forward road begins.

Our vision

A world where the tools of clinical insight are not locked behind a therapy door.

Where individuals, families, and organizations have real, usable ways to recognize their patterns, understand their reactions, and move forward with clarity and connection.

Core values

What guides the work

Evidence based

Every tool is rooted in established clinical research. Never trend, always grounded.

Human dignity

People are met without judgment, and their lived experience is the starting point.

Accessibility

Insight shouldn't require a clinical degree to use. We translate; we don't gatekeep.

Forward movement

The work is oriented toward change, not diagnosis. Always practical, always applicable.

Please read

Education, not therapy

Our founder is a licensed clinical social worker, and our programs draw on clinical research. But Forward Road Institute does not provide therapy, counseling, diagnosis, or treatment.

Attending a workshop, seminar, intensive, or speaking event does not create a therapist and client relationship. Our facilitators work in an educational role only.

What we do

We teach. Through workshops, seminars, keynotes, and professional development, we help people understand patterns, stress, and behavior, and we give them practical tools they can use right away. Participants reflect, practice, and leave with a plan of their own.

What we don't do

We don't provide therapy, counseling, diagnosis, or treatment for any condition, and we are not a crisis or emergency service. Nothing we offer takes the place of care from a licensed provider.

If therapy is needed, we'll help you find it. Our facilitators will gladly provide a referral to a licensed provider. You can also contact Helping Hearts Heal Counseling Services, LLC, a separate licensed counseling practice, at [email protected].

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.

A proprietary framework for lasting change

The Forward Method

Four movements that take a person, or a team, from reacting to a pattern to choosing a new direction. Every workshop, book, and program Forward Road Institute builds runs on this same four step arc.

A

Step one

Acknowledge

Name the pattern without shame.

Recognize what is happening, what sets it off, and what it costs.

P

Step two

Process

Understand where it came from.

Learn what the pattern has been protecting, so insight can replace blame.

I

Step three

Integrate

Connect insight to daily life.

Practice new responses until they hold up under real pressure.

R

Step four

Reclaim

Choose a new response, on purpose.

Carry the change into your work, your family, and your community.

Managing Disruptive Behavior in the Classroom

Simple, effective strategies that actually work

Designed by two Hamilton Township educators with a combined 45+ years in the classroom, the counseling office, and the crisis room. This is not a lecture about theory. It starts with the teacher's own nervous system, then moves to field tested, in the moment strategies that participants rehearse in real time.

Participants will be able to

  • Recognize the function behind disruptive behavior: what students are communicating, not just how they are acting
  • Apply the 3-Step Reset Strategy to de-escalate situations quickly and professionally
  • Use three proactive prevention strategies before behavior starts
  • Build or refine a simple, sustainable classroom reward system
  • Avoid the most common teacher mistakes that escalate behavior
  • Identify their own “person” for co-regulation, debriefing, and support
  • Distinguish between students who need redirection and those who need clinical support

The Behavior Behind the Behavior

Trauma informed professional development for K to 12 educators

Through real student stories, educators learn how trauma shows up in the classroom and what one consistent, safe, predictable adult can do about it. You don't have to be a therapist. You have to be a steady presence, and that is your superpower.

Three parts

  • What trauma actually is. The impact on the nervous system, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), survival mode versus learning mode, attachment, and racial and community trauma.
  • What it looks like in your classroom. Fight, flight, and freeze responses, common school triggers, and how trauma shows up differently in elementary, middle, and high school.
  • What you can actually do. Relationship first, language shifts, the 2x10 strategy, predictable routines, and a look at race, equity, and the discipline gap.
“This child is not giving you a hard time. They are having a hard time.”Dr. Ross Greene
“Why did you do that?”→“What happened to you?”
“You need to calm down.”→“I can see you're upset. I'm right here.”
“Do you want to fail?”→“I'm not going to give up on you.”
Audience
K to 12 teachers, support staff, and administrators
Takeaway
A personal commitment card: one student to see differently, one thing to do differently in five school days

Not therapy. Educators learn to recognize and respond, not to treat. Students who need clinical support should be referred through school procedures.

Beyond the Mask

Navigating impostor experiences as a Black professional woman

Impostor feelings are a common, well documented experience, not a verdict on your ability. This seminar looks at how race, gender, and workplace culture shape those feelings for Black women, and builds a toolkit for responding to real conditions without absorbing every signal as a judgment on your worth.

You'll leave able to

  • Understand impostor phenomenon and why it shows up differently for Black women
  • Recognize your own trigger moments, from promotions to being “the only” in the room
  • Practice at least three evidence informed coping strategies
  • Walk out with a written personal action plan and a short list of supports to request at work
Audience
Black professional women, women's leadership programs, employee resource groups, and organizations committed to retention and advancement
Covers
Seven coping strategies, plus the organizational supports that help most: sponsorship, transparent feedback, resourced affinity groups, psychological safety, and bias aware manager training

The Forward Road Women's Intensive

What are you still carrying that isn't yours?

For the woman everyone calls when something goes wrong. She may look like she has it together, but privately she's exhausted, over functioning, and saying yes when she means no. This intensive helps women name the roles, expectations, guilt, and emotional responsibilities they've accumulated, then decide what to keep, what to change, and what they're finally ready to put down.

Before: “Why am I always the one who has to handle everything?”
After: “What am I choosing to handle, and what am I no longer willing to carry?”

See the eight sessions
1The Woman Everyone Needs: who did you learn to become?
2The Invisible Load: responsibility versus over-responsibility
3The Resentment Report: resentment is information
4The Cost of Keeping the Peace: what has your silence cost you?
5The Guilt Trap: “I feel guilty” is not “I am guilty”
6Put It Down: what you're carrying that isn't yours
7Who Are You Without the Role?
8The Woman I'm Becoming: one thing you'll do differently within 72 hours

The Forward Road Decision

For everything she's carrying, each woman chooses:

“Braking” the Pattern

How to stop running your past into your present

It's about why we keep repeating the same relationship pattern over and over, and how to actually stop.

Most of us are running an old script in our closest relationships: chasing, shutting down, controlling, disappearing. We picked it up so early we think it's just who we are. Drawing on 25 years as a licensed clinical social worker, Tara Walters walks readers from recognizing their pattern to actually interrupting it. It's written for anyone, not just people in therapy.
